Eugene to Bandon, OR

After a delicious breakfast at the hotel, we headed out to one of the Nike stores in Eugene.  Bill Bowerman, former Oregon track coach, cofounded Nike in 1971 in Eugene...so I guess it like being in the hometown of Nike. Next our travels took us over to explore the University of Oregon football stadium and the Hayward Track and Field stadium.  We happened to go during open house hours, so we were able to see a little bit of the history. Looking at how massive the program and facilities are, I can see why they call this place Track Town USA!  Both kids loved reading all about the history of shoes and about the legendary coach, as well as Steve Prefontaine. It took about an hour to arrive next at the Sweet Creek Falls. The main trailhead was closed, but we were all able to conquer the one mile round trip hike to the waterfall. We were so proud of Charles for doing so well even though the ground was very uneven and slippery with his crutches. It was worth the short hike as the waterfall was beautiful. The rain was a steady mist the whole time which really added to the mystery and beauty of the forest (despite being wet). Next stop was a 30 min drive into the town of Florence to grab a local coffee and snack before getting on the road to make the final drive of the day to Bandon. The fog, misty rain, and cooler weather gave us a Idaho feel as we drove the winding roads down the coastline of Oregon.  Once in town we drove straight to the Bandon Fish Market to enjoy a fish and chips dinner with chowder.  The google reviews were spot on as this little fish house delivered. We also explored the Bandon boardwalk and saw some seals just sleeping and hanging out. We stayed the night at the Lighthouse Inn which was under construction, but still clean and warm. When asked everyone else to describe our lodging in one word, they said special, interesting, and simple. The room even came with its own biohazard bag. But that's a story for another day.  Looking forward to the Jedediah Redwood State park tomorrow!
