Bear visits Dr. Millichamp

Over 5 years ago when Bear was diagnosed with Uveodermatological Syndrome (UDS), we knew that becoming blind was a reality for him. For the next 4 years, we fought hard with medication and drops to keep any form of sight we could.  We are grateful that it was a slow progression so that we had the opportunity to train him better with navigating the world around him.  Today, we had his 6 month check up with Dr. Millichamp where he confirmed that both eyes were not measuring any pressure at all, were sunken back into the eye sockets, nonfunctioning, and causing more problems now with the open areas in the front of eyes created with the eyeballs sunken back.  He strongly urged us to consider having a bilateral enucleation where we remove both eyes and have the areas sewn shut.  He explained the procedure would be outpatient, approx. 2 weeks in a cone, and then stitches come out.  I was shocked when he made the comment that at this point, he would no longer be a patient of theirs or need an Opthamologist.  I can’t quite explain all of the emotions going through my mind right now, but I know we will be praying for guidance and making a quick decision as to what is best for Bear.
