Island Park Adventures (Day 2)

We have an odd license plate, so we can only get into yellowstone on odd days (Thursday). So, we packed a lot of fun into our day today around the area.  First up was Johnny Sack Cabin on the Big Spring River. Johnny Sack built the entire cabin by hand with tools and no help. It took him 3 years and he completed it in 1932. His craftsmanship was breathtaking and we thought of Grampee and his wood working skills. Caelin loved the fact that Johnny Sack was 4'11"...the same as she is now. Ha!  His cabin sits along the banks of Big Springs which is a naturally fed spring that produces 120 MILLION Gallons of water per DAY! We walked around the river, fed the trout, and enjoyed the clear water. Once in the car we headed to drive the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway. We stopped along the way to hike to the upper falls (1 mile round trip) and the lower falls (2.5 miles round trip). It was beautiful and the Upper Falls were my favorite with the mist coming off the falls.  Next up was a 13 mile drive to the top of Sawtelle Peak which is very steep and scary!  The road barely fit one car and drops off sharply. I was not a fan and wanted to turn back!  Once we got to the top, the views of the valley and surrounding mountains were gorgeous. I guess it was worth it in the end, but it was not an easy drive, lol!  We finished the day with dinner at Lakeside Lodge on Henry's Fork Lake. It was late for dinner, but sunset is at 9:30pm, so it felt much earlier since it was light outside. Charles had a tomahawk steak, Cade had fish and chips, I had seared Tuna, and Caelin a mound of "trashcan" nachos. It was all so yummy!  Yellowstone tomorrow...so off to sleep good with Jesus!
